March of the Living Scroll journey

2022

A journey following the story of a Torah scroll that was plundered by the Germans from the Olomouc community in Czech Moravia during the Second World War. The scroll was redeemed together with thousands of other books previously owned by Czech Jewish communities and kept in Longdon by

MST (Memorial Scrolls Trust).

The scroll was lent to Beit Theresienstadt by MST for educational purposes. It was received in a meaningful and touching journey that began in the Czech Republic and ended in Israel. The journey included encounters with the Jewish community in Prague, tours of the city, a march from the Bohusovice train station, where those deported to Ghetto Theresienstadt had initially arrived, to the city of Theresienstadt with the scroll, and participating in the official annual ceremony marking the day of the ghetto’s liberation at the Czech Terezin Memorial. After the official ceremony, a moving ceremony was held where the Torah scroll was handed by Jeffrey Ohrenstein, chairman of MST, to Tami Kinberg, Director of Beit Theresienstadt, and two of the ghetto’s survivors – Dita Kraus and Hana Sternlicht, who accompanied the group. In conclusion, a tour of Theresienstadt was held.

The Torah scroll was brought to Israel, where a ceremony was held at Beit Theresienstadt.
