Efforts at documentation and memorialization were initiated while the Theresienstadt ghetto was still active, with the aim of conveying the story of the ghetto to the next generations. In addition to artifacts, adult drawings, children’s drawings, personal belongings, and many documents kept in the collections, the archive encompasses over 600 files categorizied by subject. These files contain biographical information, personal testimonies, various texts, research studies, and press cuttings.
The staff of the Beit Theresienstadt archive specializes in searching for relatives, based on an index containing names of the ghetto inmates that is crossed with other sources. In recent years several touching stories have emerged, as well as meetings between relatives who had previously been unaware of each other’s existence.
